What Does This Need?

I've had this 1950's TV cabinet that I have used for storage. It used to be my grandparents. My mom hates it.
It's a square (the tv's were big and boxy then so that makes sense)...and I've got it in my entryway hallway right now across from my kitchen.
Dan even built some shelves in there for me so it could function as a home for my kitchen linens. Which works great.
But I'm thinking I want to change the color, re-stain it and maybe change out the handles. I like the piece, it's just looking TIRED. Any bright ideas on what to do with this?

Hi Kris! Wow, fun blog! How exciting is it to stumble upon all these new ideas and friends! Thank you for visiting me. I will definitely be back to visit you!

I really like the cabinet you are featuring. I think changing the handles would make a big difference, and as for stain, I am always partial to a dark stain, but since this is already pretty dark it may not need it? It's hard to say! It's a cool piece either way!

My suggestion would be to start with the handles--something that shows up against the dark. You could either clean it up and stain it a darker mahogany color or you could paint it black. You could even go crazy and modge podge a patterned paper on the top for some contrast. Well, there's my 4 cents! Can't wait to see what you do with it. I WISH I had something like that!

What a great piece! Paint it back, distress it & antique it. Leave the original hardware!

I think you should paint it with a high gloss paint. Maybe red. It is such a cool piece. I think I would keep the original hardware. Whatever you end up doing I know it will be beautiful.

It needs.....to be at my house! :) Love it! I agree with Parker and Chris...red or black with maybe a small runner or placemat on top with bulky candles or a big bird cage and little nest on the side. Definatly a keeper!

Oh I love that! I don't think it needs painting, but maybe updating the handles? And then maybe a pretty picture frame or two on top, and I say you're good to go!

Yeah...new handles would be could, but I am sure whatever you do it will look great. You seem to have a little niche for things like this. It is a cool piece of furniture. And the storage space is great, since our homes don't have too much storage places.

Thanks for visiting my blog! :o) Cute cabinet you have there. My first inclination was to cover it with decopauged paper. I have no clue why since I have never done that to a piece of furniture in my life. lol Maybe it was the pretty 'scrapbook like' paper in your blog background that inspired me? ;o)

I love that piece!
I wouldn't paint it. Its beautiful wood and is far enough away from your black funriture that it doesn't need to "go".
I wonder if you stripped it???
Fun project!

You know that I would paint it. I wouldn't be able to help myself! Black if you want it to coordinate with what you already have. Red if you want a pop of color.

OK. That's weird. I think I was commenting on your blog at the same time you were commenting on mine.

I used my new favorite spray paint. Krylon Indoor/Outdoor black satin. It does kind of look two-toned in the picture. Must be the light.

Oh, I love this. I cant wait to see what you do with it! I think a new stain and hardware will bring it back to life! I dont know if this is your style, but I saw something similar in Country Living.

The cut out the middles of the doors and put in chicken wire, then scrapbook paper or wall paper behind that and paint it black or off white? Just an idea! ;)

It needs to be black and distressed! Leave the hardware or do oil rubbed bronze. I have ablack cabinet I painted a few posts ago it you want to pop over and look. Jen R
