Food Storage Room

What started out as a part of our huge basement has now been carved out into a nice little "L shaped" storage room.
Room for piling up construction junk until two weekends ago...
(Looking out into the rest of the basement) Dan and I primed and painted it.  He hung some nice lighting up as well.
We let the boys help paint the concrete wall side, they thought that was great fun! Almost as fun as arranging the cans.  Graham helped for all of 10 minutes.  Greg stuck with me to see every can perfectly facing forward.  He is for sure my son!
Dan laid carpet and padding down that my friend Kjersten had given us as scraps so my feet won't freeze in the wintertime.  We bought 4 more CostCo shelves to hold our stockpile/food storage down here thanks to his bonus from work last week!
Going into the original cold storage space...
Still a work in progress, but at least the food is kept separate from all my dishes and odds and ends.
Looking back towards the new part...the one wall will just have bins stacked of the kids clothes, etc.

You have NO idea how excited I am for this!
My pantry upstairs in the kitchen is just tiny so this affords me the extra space to put our food storage.  I know this is a foreign concept to some but I love having extra food, toiletries etc. on hand, especially during the winter months so I don't have to head to the store with three children in the snow!
And the best part is....NOTHING in my food storage/stockpile cost me more than $1.00!!  I am really into using coupons and have done all of this while bringing down my grocery bill from $600 a month to about $200 or $250 per month for a family of five!!
Just by combining using coupons with sale prices.

Linking up as promised to Chris's party :

Pretty Lady,

YOU have been busy. I never would have imagined that my Kristen friend (who I met in a dingy dorm) would have her own food storage room. I am so thrilled and excited for your new basement. I can't wait to see what colors you end up going with. It will be magical. That's for sure.

love you,
Kitty

Wow when I seen all the ketchup I was wondering what was up!! I would love to know HOW you do all of that with coupons. Would love to see you blog about how to you save so much. We are a family of 3 and I know we spend somewhere around $350-$500 a month in food and that's with hardly any meat!!

Oh. my. LORD! This is even more fantabulous than I remember it. Ok. Here's the assignment for the next post. How did you buy everything on a budget? Explain your frugal brilliance! I can't stop looking at everything. Doug just said, "What's so great that you keep scrolling back and forth over?"

Very nice! We have a cold storage room too. It is great for all our extra food storage (we shop sales and stock up too.) I'm inspired to paint the concrete walls to brighten it up, and since the hanging lightbulb broke this week, it is time to add a brighter light. Thanks for the inspiration.

You and I would soooo get along! I love have extra food, cleaning supplies, etc. The amount of toilet paper I keep on stock is a running joke in our home. And please don't get me started on organization! Love it!

I only wish I had a basement to really stockpile! Lucky you!

I saw a link to your blog on couponing to disney. Great job on your food storage! I'm curious where you found your shelving. I LOVE shelving like that but it seems so expensive! Did you get a good deal on the shelves?

I also came over from Couponing to Disney. I am so jealous of your space! We just have a crawl space and our house is tiny so I have had to come up with some creative storage methods!

Also, thanks for the link to calculate how much to stock. I am heading there next.

I linked over from Pinterest and just want to say it's WONDERFUL! You bought the perfect shelves. I don't keep cereal because my kitchen is too small. Good job.
