What to Do...

Grand plans as of tonight include storage room, kitchenette area....
Large family room here with new entertainment center and flat screen tv...sigh. On the other side of the basement a warm and cozy office for Dan (who works from home 2 days a week, and BRRR it gets cold down here) with a large laundry/sewing/craft room for me. Instead of the laundry closet in my hallway upstairs where I see boys underwear and dirty clothes sneaking a path into my family room. I know, ew.
OR...rip these (as the contractor tonight said and I quote) "cheapest cabinets possible to purchase" out - put in something lovely like stainless appliances, pretty cabinets that don't break when you shut them (Dan has repaired almost ALL of these at some point in the past four years) and granite countertops?

That would also mean we install new flooring and I would still have two crazy, energetic boys with nowhere to build forts and play. But I see and use my kitchen every.single.day.

UGH.
I need a money tree.

It all sounds wonderful to me!!

If you do happen to find that money tree, will you please post a map on your blog?!!

I hate my stainless steel. I'm just sayin'.

This is kind of a yucky decision. I think I need to come over and consult.

What a great space in the basement. The plans sound wonderful to me...full laundry room...craft room! The kitchen plans sound good too. I'd love to redo ours...one day maybe. :) Good luck!

I like the sound of that finished basement. You are such a good decorator that you can get by with the kitchen a while longer and still have a darling house!

I hate trying to decide things like that. We are trying to re-do as many rooms as we can in our new house. The kitchen is one I will be doing this Spring.

I have a craft room in our basement and I LOVE it!

For what it's worth, we finished our basement and use it some, but not as much as I thought we would. If I had to do it again I would redo our retro kitchen. Yours looks like a palace compared to mine. But your boys are older than mine, so maybe the basement...

Basement...its my input. Dan has to work down there and you'd hardly here the boys when they were down there playing...
We use ours daily. When we're off track we use it almost all day.
Next year, tackle the kitchen
Either decision you;ll benefit from so much! Happy deciding!

I say basement! You weren't even thinking about redo-ing your kitchen right away so why not put it on hold and turn your basement into something great. Just think a place for your boys and all their toys to go...sound like heaven to me!

Are you finishing your basement? I'm so jealous. And when you find that money tree will you let me know?

LOL!!! It IS dad's wheelbarrow!! And I'd prefer to breed regular shih-tzus as opposed to freaking ones. My neighbors would hate me though - we have enough dog breeders around here!

I'd say do the basement. We just finished our in the fall and we LOVE it.

If you redo your kitchen, rip out that island and put a bigger island the other way, parallel to the sink and get an overhang so you can have some bar stools there for the boys. That's where my kids [3 of them] eat and do their homework. By the way, I love my stainless appliances. People just need to know how to clean them correctly. Soapy water on a sponge followed by a dry towel, no fancy cleaners or anything.

Wow love the space what possibilties. If you live close id buy your old cabinets off of you they look tons better than the ones in the house we are buying!!

I vote for the basement. I think your kitchen looks darling and it would be great to have extra space downstairs. Good luck!!
